AIFF 2013: The Dragonphoenix Chronicles: Indomitable

Wow. Talk about surprise. The Dragonphoenix Chronicles: Indomitable is the first Greek epic fantasy film, directed by Thanos Kermitsis (Τroglodytes).
It takes place in the mythical land of Elebros and follows the story of Dragar (Yannis Roumboulias), a former warrior from the north who is now a slave of the mighty Dragonphoenix Empire but wants to return to his homeland and his wife. Dragar manages to escape captivity by taking the daughter of an Empire General hostage. He and Valeria (Constantina Georganta) travel while being hunted by the General (Meletis Georgiadis) 's troops and they meet a lot of obstacles along the way, both human and supernatural.
I went to the movie prejudiced and with very low expectations since fantasy is not a genre that greek cinema has touched - up until now. But from the moment the movie started I was taken aback by the professionalism with which the people involved had approached the project. I soon got absorbed into the story and wanted to see what happened next while at the same time I enjoyed the camera work, the photography, the great special effects and the amazing soundtrack by Mitsos Papavasileiou  (Amazing! Where can we find it?).
Ok, let's face it. The film is far from flawless with its main problems being the editing and the make-up and it is up against some super films of its genre. The use of greek language was also a bit off-putting at first but thankfully the dialogues avoided being cheesy and we easily got used to listening our native tongue. However, when the director answered a few questions during the - beautiful - end credits and we found out that the film was made with a budget of just 10,000 - practically no budget at all - we were able to forgive some mistakes. After all, being a fan of fantasy, I've seen a lot of big-budget movies that were awful compared to this. It really makes you wonder what these people could achieve with more money... miracles, that's for sure.
The Dragonphoenix Chronicles: Indomitable is a beautiful film made with love and that shows. If its creators fix a few problems that stood out, it can soon become a cult classic. Let's hope that the film will soon find distributors that'll respect the material and bring it to cinemas so that people will see what imaginative filmmakers can do and more doors will open for those who want to make a difference in greek cinema.
I went in ready to see something that I'd soon forget but got out excited and hopeful that we'll have a sequel one day. Good job, guys. Μπράβο.
